Black History Month in Oviedo

Throughout February, the City of Oviedo will be celebrating Black History Month with a social media post every day using the elements from our website and the beautiful mural at Round Lake Park created by Xavier Moss.

You can find the elements here: BLACK HISTORY IN OVIEDO

and take a trip to the park to see if you can find all the elements!

Oviedo has a rich and diverse history from our pioneers who are memorialized in so many ways, even with family members who still live in the City!

East Magnolia Street Closure

East Magnolia Street is closed for extensive construction and repairs. The closure began on Monday, February 9, 2026, and is expected to last approximately 6 to 8 months. Residents living in this area will still have access to the road, and local deliveries will be allowed.

Through traffic will not be permitted down East Magnolia. We recommend that residents follow the posted detour signs and drive cautiously in the affected area to ensure the safety of the workers.

The entrance to Sweetwater Park is open.

Thank you for your patience while the construction is taking place.

Please see the map below for detours and closures.

Franklin Street Streetscaping Complete

We are pleased to announce that Franklin Street has reopened and the streetscaping is complete.

Crews were working hard to plant new trees in place, install the street lighting and make sure the road is smooth for all travelers between Geneva Drive and Central.  At night, the trees will be lit on one side, and streetlights will keep the area well-lit on the other.

There is still some work being done in the walkway area, so please avoid going through the barriers where crews are finishing up.

Great Tornado Drill

The Great Torando Drill was February 4, 2026 and the Oviedo Fire Department would like to thank everyone who practiced tornado safety at 10 a.m.

We are prone to severe weather in Central Florida, so know where to go and what to do during a tornado can be life saving. Always remember, if you hear our tornado alarms sounding during a storm, seek cover immediately in a room with no windows.

We would like to address the concerns of our citizens when it comes to seeing kids in the roadways on eMobility devices. We have received messages from concerned drivers and parents about large groups of kids seemingly ‘taking over’ the roadways on these devices. Our officers are conducting traffic stops, talking to kids and parents, and issuing citations for these violations, and handing out informational pamphlets. We want to make everyone aware of safety and how these devices are supposed to be used. Reckless driving of these devices, such as impeding traffic, weaving in and out of traffic and driving the wrong way can lead to serious injury or death, which is something we want everyone to avoid. Please talk to your kids about how to safely operate them, wearing helmets, safety equipment and knowing the law.

We have created a web page dedicated to information to review: CLICK HERE

Click on the tab that says EMOBILITY SAFETY AND LAWS.

If you see anyone operating these devices in an unsafe way, please contact the Oviedo Police Department at 407-971-5700 and speak directly with a dispatcher. Please provide your location and describe what you are seeing. If possible, please provide the direction of travel.

Let’s keep our roadways safe for everyone.

OUR ENVIRONMENT BANNER

Survey the Septic

The average household septic system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional. Household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Alternative systems with electrical float switches, pumps, or mechanical components should be inspected more often, generally once a year. A service contract is important since alternative systems have mechanized parts.

These are the major factors that influence how often to pump your septic system:

  • Household size
  • Total wastewater generated
  • Volume of solids in wastewater
  • Septic tank size

Failure to maintain or pump the system leads to surface water pollution including algae blooms, human health hazards, disease to local wildlife and harm to our ecosystem. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) more than four billion gallons of wastewater from septic systems are dispersed underground every day.

“I’ve lived in this house many years and never pumped my septic tank, is that a   problem?”

If the household has more than several occupants, this could mean several things;

  • The tank may have a leak and the water is going directly into the ground instead of into the designed drain fields.
  • The tank could be full of solids, they could be slowly migrating into the drain fields and will eventually create a costly fix, potentially having to replace the whole system.

If the Grass is Greener Please check your Septic Tank!
