Preparing for a storm make take a little more time for older adults, especially if they live alone or independently. Make sure you are ready by using the Ready.Gov preparedness guide for older adults above. You can download and print, or keep a copy on your computer or phone.
Step 1 - Assess Your Needs - Understand your needs during an emergency. How will you fare should you lose power for at least three days, possibly longer? Do you have mobility issues? Do you need to plan for transportation to get you (and a pet) to the correct shelter? Do you have medical equipment needs? Do you understand the flood risk of your home/neighborhood?
Step 2 - Make A Plan - In case of an emergency, who will be the first person you can contact? Have a way to stay sustained should the power go out. Make sure all of your information is updated to get emergency alerts on your phone. Put your plan in place at least 24-48 hours before a major storm. Make sure someone you know can get to you after a storm.
Step 3 - Engage Your Support Network - Have a support network of family, friends or senior groups you can reach out to if you need to evacuate or seek help. Make sure you have a plan between yourself and that group of people and review it throughout the year to assess any new needs that may arise.
