ISO Class 2 Rating

The City of Oviedo Fire Department is proud to provide an outstanding ISO Class 2 Rating, thereby providing fire and casualty insurance premium savings for our citizens and business owners. The Insurance Service Office (ISO) is the leading source of information concerning fire and casualty fire risk and provides Fire Department ratings based on their ability to deliver fire service protection.

Fire Departments are evaluated on categories including fire alarm and communication systems, fire apparatus and equipment, pump testing, training, number of firefighters on duty, emergency response and station locations, pre-emergency planning, fire hydrant testing, and the water distribution system and capacity. Did you know that our Fire Stations have been strategically located in order to provide the best response times and achieve the best ISO station location grade? Did you also know that every building in Oviedo is no further than 450 feet from a fire hydrant that is inspected twice each year?

The City of Oviedo Fire Department's outstanding Class 2 Rating was achieved from the support of the Oviedo City Council over the years to invest in proper fire protection and a quality water system for the Oviedo Community. The Fire Department has also done its part by purchasing the proper fire apparatus with the correct pump capacity and other equipment needs and assuring compliance with all the other important grading factors, such as training and pre-emergency planning.

The Oviedo Fire Department is honored to be recognized as a Gold Helmet Department for having many of our firefighters enrolled in the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer. The NIOSH National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NFR is the largest effort undertaken to understand and reduce cancer among U.S. firefighters. Congratulations to our department for being a leader in this historic effort!  Oviedo Fire is the first Fire Department in Central Florida to receive this designation, and we are very proud of our firefighters each and every day.

Firefighter Shane Kelly Memorial

TShane Kellyhe Oviedo City Council, Oviedo Fire Department staff and firefighters, and the Oviedo citizens officially dedicated Shane Kelly Park on Saturday, September 15th, 2007, in memory of Oviedo Firefighter Shane Kelly. The park features 165 acres of pristine soccer fields, multipurpose fields, Bark Park, and passive land. The Shane Kelly Memorial Monument is strategically located among the soccer fields, allowing sports stars, parents, grandparents, and visitors to view the memorial inscription reflecting the final sacrifice made by Oviedo Firefighter Shane Kelly.

Oviedo Firefighter Shane Kelly tragically lost his life as well as Dr. Donald Diebel Jr., on June 8th, 2002 while providing emergency medical care at the scene of a serious traffic crash on the Florida Turnpike. Shane was a rising star within the City of Oviedo Fire Department and was admired by his peers and officers and was destined to become a future officer due to his compassionate attitude and exceptional Firefighting skills. Shane would often take new recruits under his wing by mentoring and providing training on a regular basis.

Oviedo Firefighter Shane Kelly received full honors in a memorial service while hundreds of Firefighters and Officers from the Florida Fire Service paid tribute. An estimated 60 Fire Apparatus participated in the procession that drove past Shane's assigned Oviedo Fire Station 2. The Oviedo community provided great support by standing in somber silence along the route and displaying encouragement and gratitude on roadside signs and many other thoughtful ways.
